Some Game History And News

The evolution of video gaming

lf your last experience playing a
video game involved navigating a .
yellow semicircular creature around
a dotted maze aùd munching ghosts,
you're wambehindthe curve.
The video game industry
changed almost completely since Pac-
Man gobbled up the spare time and
countless quarters of a generation.

What was oncejusta thumb-
numbingpastime for suburban kids
has become a multi-billion-dollar en-
tertainment. Somepeople
decry the rise of violence and sexual
content in games, while others laud
the high levelly mental stimulation
required of the modern gamer

In the beginning. . . video games
were pretty terrible, at least by
today's standards. One of the earliest
games, Pong, loosely simulated
tennis by Oowingplayers to volley a
t-ball'' between two ('paddles'' (really
a dot bouncing between two lees).
.The video game
idustry progressçd in the early 1980s, with a series of

A number of
studies by respectable institutions
have drawn links between video
game violence and youth aggression.
But plenty of other studies have
found ho juch connections.
Sciehce writer Stevenlohnson, in
his book Everything Bad Is Good for
Fold, argues that today's video games,
which require aniyticalreasoning,
and some intellectually stimulating
than any other leisure Activity.
